A little about my SPARC box... Sun Ultra 5 Workstation
I wanted to get another box to use as a firewall/server on my home network and also to play around with Linux on as I'm still a relative n00b in that respect. I decided to see if I could pick up an old SPARC box as I thought it would be interesting to play around with a different processor architecture. In the end I picked up an old Ultra 5 pretty cheap on e-bay. It's never going to break any speed records these days but it's perfectly fine as a web/ftp server on my network, and as it's going to spend most of its time sitting there not doing very much I thought I'd put it to work on SETI@home. Of course if anyone wants to donate me any faster SPARC hardware for the cause feel free! ;-) I started off by installing the Debian 3.0r3 (Woody) distribution. Unlike most Linux distributions Debian runs on a wide range of hardware architectures including SPARC and has a reputation of being a very stable and secure distro. However, as a result it is also a bit behind the times and I've since upgraded to the testing distribution "Sarge".
